Joint Journey

651-232-6633

For some people, total joint replacement surgery is the key to getting back on their feet.

At St. John’s Hospital, joint replacement is not just a surgical event, it’s a journey for each patient. it requires getting the body ready, getting the home ready and preparing for the actual surgery.

Our Joint Journey program was designed to provide information and support from the time you schedule surgery through the months following discharge from the hospital. Joint Journey helps you smoothly progress from surgery to recovery and lets you enjoy activities with minimal pain and stiffness.

Joint replacement class

Joint Journey begins when you attend a total joint replacement education class at St. John’s Hospital. This class is designed to help you and your family prepare for surgery and recovery.

Find upcoming knee and hip replacement classes.

You'll learn about:

  • What to expect before, during and after surgery
  • Pain management
  • Ways to prevent complications
  • Community resources that may be helpful after surgery

Family/friend involvement

The program focuses on getting you and your family, if you wish, actively involved in the entire process — from pre-op to recovery. Family members can get involved by attending the class with you before surgery and going to physical therapy sessions with you after surgery. They can help by learning the types of exercises that are important for your recovery.

Group physical therapy

Group physical therapy is a great opportunity to work alongside others who've been through similar surgeries. You'll dress in your own comfortable clothing and be encouraged to have a family member or friend attend physical therapy sessions, too.

Moving forward

All patients receive individualized care from nurses, therapists and patient care assistants who specialize in caring for joint replacement patients.

In the hospital, you'll follow a daily itinerary that includes:

  • Goals
  • Physical therapy times
  • Tips for avoiding bumps on the road to recovery

Joint Journey focuses on returning you home following a 1-3 day hospital stay. You'll be encouraged to follow a customized exercise and mobility training plan after surgery.
