Breastfeeding Support

Breastfeeding Support

At HealthEast, we advocate for breastfeeding and are committed to providing support and education. However, we also understand that breastfeeding is a personal choice and not for everyone. Whether or not you choose to breastfeed, your decision will be respected by our staff.

Before your baby is born

We offer a prenatal class called Breastfeeding Basics to help expectant moms and dads learn about breastfeeding. The class provides basic, essential information needed for success and covers:

  • Benefits of breastfeeding
  • Preparing for breastfeeding
  • Role of the support person
  • Avoiding and solving problems
  • Where to get breastfeeding support

In the hospital

Our Maternity Care nurses have specialized training to support lactation (breastfeeding). At St. John's and Woodwinds, there is also a daily breastfeeding class for new moms in the hospital. A certified lactation consultant is available to help if you have concerns.

Purchase breastfeeding supplies

The HealthEast Outpatient Lactation Clinic at St. John's has Medela breast pumps and a limited number of breastfeeding supplies for sale. Electric breast pumps prices include a $10 discount. To purchase these products, call HealthEast Outpatient Lactation at 651-232-3147 and leave a message. A lactation consultant will call you Monday through Friday between 9 am and 2 pm. If you need to purchase products outside these hours, please call St. John's Maternity Care Center at 651-232-7550 and ask if a staff person is available to help you purchase breastfeeding supplies.

After you go home

After discharge, you can get breastfeeding support by telephone or by scheduling an appointment with a certified lactation consultant.

Call 651-232-3147 to schedule an appointment. Please note that you will need a doctor's order for insurance to cover the visit.
